tonight, of course, was the first lady michelle obama. the democrats' not so secret weapon. >> barack knows what it means when a family struggles. he knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grand kids. barack knows the american dream because he's lived it. and he wants everyone in this country, everyone to have the same opportunity no matter who we are or where we're from or what we look like or who we love. >> to break down michelle obama's speech, john king and gloria borger. apologizing for the heat in here. >> you've attracted quite a crowd. >> it's the sizzling energy bouncing off the place. i had the castro brothers who were very dynamic and very impressive i thought tonight. michelle obama i thought knocked it out of the park as you americans would say. gloria, what did you think? >> yeah. i thought she did. if you were sort of a couch potato democrat, you're sitting at home and not sure you really like the president anymore and you don't have the same passion for him, she was talking to you tonight. and she said to you, well, if people can go serve oversea

. the first lady of the united states, michelle obama, has tonight's most critical job, reminding voters why they liked her husband enough to put him in the white house, and to make the case for giving him another four years. joining us now in our coverage all of this week, anderson cooper, high above the floor. >> our new poll shows why that case is more urgent than ever for the democrat. new numbers on mitt romney's convention bounds. john, what are the numbers? >> anderson, as the democrats open their convention tonight, let's look at that very question. we know governor romney got a one-point bounce out of his convention, not so great, about half what the president got four years ago. not a big bounce. where does that leave us? the democrats' opening night two months from a critical election day. doesn't get any closer than that. 48-48. >> the convention will pay tribute to a champion of health care reform, the late senator edward kennedy, and the woman who stood by his side, vicki kennedy. >> meanwhile, the floor plan is completely different from the republican convention in tampa. sinc

to be done. >> tonight we heard from the star of the obama family. first lady michelle obama. this hour we will be showing you the big moments, the first speeches and we begin with the first lady. take a look. serving as your first lady is an honor and a privilege. but back when we first came together four years ago, i still had concerns about this journey we'd begun. while i believed deeply in my husband's vision for this country and i was certain he would make an extraordinary president, like any mother, i was worried about what it would mean for our girls if he got that chance. how would we keep them grounded under the glare of the national spotlight. how would they feel being uprooted from their school, their friends and the only home they had ever known. our life before moving to washington was filled with simple joys. saturdays at soccer games, sundays at grand's house and a date night was either dinner or a movie because as an exhausted mom, i couldn't stay awake for both. and the truth is, i loved the life we had built for our girls. and i deeply love the man i had built that life

to what people are expecting from the first lady michelle obama's speech tonight. >> look, that is part of the reason for the excitement because first of all, have you these people and the configuration as you can see behind me, i'm above the podium which is a really great vantage point. as you can see, people are -- very, few people, very few delegations are actually on the floor. it is a bowl. they are up and around on the sides. that is, i think, making it sound a lot larger, louder, than it actually might be. it is very loud. they are very excited and they are not all here yet. there are a lot of empty seats. typically people are at dinner now but will be here in time for the keynote address. people are excited to hear castro the keynote speaker, but principally this is michelle obama's night. she is already throughout the campaign. they sent sought an e-mail a half hour ago asking people to text and send in $3 donations in advance of her speech. she told ryan seacrest today on his radio show she had not watched ann romney's speech and came here briefly to look at the stage and look
